default
Posted on Mon, 14 Sep 2015
Question: Can ringworm that I've had for over a year cause elevated lymphocytes
doctor
Answered by Dr. Sassen S Kwasa (15 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Yes ringworms can cause elevation in your white count (lymphocytosis)

Detailed Answer:
Welcome to HCM. Yes the presence of ring worms and other parasites can cause an elevation in lymphocyte count, however, how high is this count, it also depends on the numbers we are talking about. It would be best to seek treatment and see if this value improves. I hope that this helps you out, good luck and thank you for your question.

My count is 52.4 its just gradually went uo over the weeks when my ringworm has been flaring up again
doctor
Answered by Dr. Sassen S Kwasa (7 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
That is higher than expected for an organism/fungal infection.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the follow up, please note that is a little high for a fungal/ring worm exposure, it is reassuring that it went up with the ring worm flare, but I would talk to a doctor about this value, I have seen patient with this elevated for no reason (idiopathic) but obviously you can only say it is idiopathic after a workup. I would go see a hematologist about the matter, and if it is okay then you are fine because it does not seem like the value will be going down and you don't want to be constantly worried about it. I hope this helps. Thanks again.

My absoulte lympocytes were 5.24 is that too high? Could i have leukemia?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Sassen S Kwasa (2 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Yes this is possible that you have leukemia

Detailed Answer:
However, what other symptoms are you having, this could also be a new baseline for you, I have seen many patients with the same. leukemia and lymphoma are definitely on the differential diagnosis, however, I would visit with a hematologist to properly evaluate the rest of your blood results, these are percentages of the total blood obtained on the lab draw.

My lymphosytes are 5.24
doctor
Answered by Dr. Sassen S Kwasa (33 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Thanks for clarifying, but this is not of concern

Detailed Answer:
That value makes me feel better. You may have what I believe is reactive lymphocytosis possibly to the ring work. depending on the lab, normal values are up to 4.8. So I would not stress out and get total treatment for the ring worms as I stated earlier. Thank you very much for providing additional clarification. Good luck.

Im just so worried different doctors are saying the absolute lympocyte value is abnormal at 5.24 and i have had the ringworm for over a year and it flares up still every si often as i have not treated it yet so could that be whats causing it? Also a week before i got my bloods done i had a mouth ulcer and cold sore and ive never had a cold sore before
doctor
Answered by Dr. Sassen S Kwasa (53 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
I sympathize with all the confusing information.

Detailed Answer:
Here is what I can definitively tell you.
1. One cannot diagnose you based on one lab value only. Physical exam findings have to be taken into account.
2. The value is outside of normal range, why is the big question: here are a few things that will cause what we call lymphocytosis.
a. Acute viral infections: this is consistent with your cold sore that you had before your blood testing.
b. TB (Tuberculosis) and also whooping cough (pertussis) and many lung infections
c. Protozoal infections
d. Leukemia
e. Lymphoma
f. Some connective tissue diseases,
g. those who do not have a spleen
h. those who are adrenally insufficient.

So what I am saying is that there are a number of things that could cause this elevation. I don't want you to worry so much about the leukemia and miss an opportunity to have due diligence and not get worked up properly. I sense that you are very anxious about this, I advise that it is time to go and see a doctor face to face and get some answers with more personalized care. Does this sound like a good plan?
