Can Ruptured Ear Drums Post Injury Cause Permanent Hearing Loss?
Please allow few weeks for it to heal and get clinically tested
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.
I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.
1. Ear drum rupture usually heals in a few weeks. Most of the hearing loss is temporary and will recover with time. Permanent hearing loss is rare and is seen in less than two percent of patients.
2. The hearing loss is more if the hole in eardrum is larger. If there is small hole then there is no concern. Healing should be observed over few weeks and if the holes persist then the ENT specialist might put patch and seal it. If the patch also does not work then there is a procedure called tympanoplasty by which the ear drum tympanic membrane is re constructed.
3. To test hearing loss, you might undergo an audiology test and there are accurate methods to know if you have any persisting hearing loss. You might take this test after few weeks and the report will tell if you are not able to hear certain sounds.
Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.
Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.
Regards,
Dr.Vivek
