Posted on Wed, 23 Dec 2015
Question: Can the titanium hemoclips used in a vasectomy come off? My husband didn't know the other day what these 'grains of rice' was that he's been feeling for the last few months. The vas was cut, stitched, clipped, and cauterized.

Brief Answer:
It is unlikely that Titanium clip may come off.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for your query ,based on the facts that you have posted it appears that your husband has undergone vasectomy few months back and now have noticed rice like grains .

I shall be happy if you can post me few more details to help me in making comments on your problem.
1)Has he noticed white grains in semen ?or at the site of surgery?
2) Is there any pain or discharge at the site of surgery?

The Titanium clips that are being used in surgery to ligate have firm grip and they are non absorbable so never break or disintegrate .

Get the microscopic examination of a granule or semen done to confirm the diagnosis .

There is nothing to be worried about it .

Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions ,I shall be happy to help you
Thanks and Regards.

I should clarify that the "grains of rice" are what he can feel inside of his scrotum. So by him pulling at them poses no risk of them coming off? If they did come off, could that increase the risk of pregnancy higher?

Brief Answer:
Nothing to be worriedabout .

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for feedback .
The feeling of granules in the scrotum is due to fibrous tissue that develops at the site of ligation as a reaction to foreign body (ligature) used to ligate the severed ends of Vas .It will get absorbed over a period of time .

There is o % chance of re-canalization of Vas as it has been cut and ligated .Do not worry and think of about the pregnancy.

Thanks and Regards.
