White blood cells are normal cells of the body; their presence in small quantities in the stool does not mean that there is infection or any other problem. Generally, if more than 10 white cells are seen in the stool, it is significant; most of the times, infection or some form of inflammation causes increased numbers of white cells in stools. When such problems occur, especially if there is a bacterial infection, red blood cells also begin to appear since the bowel lining gets injured and blood emerges into the cavity, to be passed out along with increased white cells and increased water content in the form of diarrhoea or dysenteric stools.

It looks as if your baby had some form of infection or inflammation which is now either subsiding or persisting in a slightly reduced intensity. Could you please share the remaining report of the stool? And what treatment was given? Also, please tell me which kind of milk she is getting and whether she is on breastfeeding also.

Thank you so much for your patient reply. I think that the treatment she received did not contain any bacteria-killing medicines; the two medicines mentioned by you are "pro-biotics" and will not cause any harm. As I answered earlier, the presence of a few WBCs is not important enough to merit any further tests or treatment. In fact, the stool RBCs have also been insignificant. I would relax if I were you.

There is no need to give that 100 ml of top milk. I am sure you are getting enough breast milk, so I would advise to give only breast milk, but give it every 2 hours, so that the baby never gets dehydrated or weak.

Thank you once again for your return. I have been thinking about this problem, but it appears more and more that your baby may be simply having what we call "breast feeding stools". In this "condition", the increased gastro-colic reflex causes the baby to pass a bowel while she is feeding at the breast. The stools are generally yellow, with a small water content, but the solid content is in the form of cheesy, small balls that have the smell of curd (yoghurt).

I don't think this is "food allergy" from the mother, so your cutting down on beans and dairy products may not help much. She probably is NORMAL. Is her weight gain adequate? Normal breastfed babies put on about 800-900 grams per month (approx. 25 gm/day), If her weight gain is adequate, just relax. Don't break your head. As she grows, her stooling pattern will change.
