Child Having Severe Pain And Vomiting. Advised To Take Fluids And Medication. Could Abdominal Migraines Be Treated?
Question: How can abdominal migraines be treated? My son does not have this condition diagnosed, BUT I am certain that he has it. He is beyond exhausted with unexpected episodes of sudden severe pain and vomiting .
He gets these episodes two or three times a year. He goes to the ER each time where he gets fluids and pain meds. Then he is sent home and is tired but fine.

Abdominal migraine is difficult to diagnose. The diagnosis is mainly based on the family history of migraine and severe abdominal pain associated with nausea and vomiting.
First of all please consult a physician and get the diagnosis confirmed and take treatment under his supervision continuously.
For your information I am giving the outline of the treatment.
Treatment of abdominal migraine has two aspects, treatment of acute attack and prevention in future acute attacks are treated with NSAIDS like Ibuprofen or Acetamenophen.
Sumitriptan is used normally in adults.
Tricyclic anti depressants are used to reduce the frequency of attacks.
Valproic acid is also used to treat abdominal migraine.
Low dose Aspirin or low dose Beta blockers are used for a prolonged period to reduce future attacks.
Cyproheptadine is shown to be useful in some migraine variants
Other drugs include intravenous fluids and antiemetics to reduce vomiting if severe.
Treatment also includes advice to recognize and avoid triggers.
Finally stress management and relaxation therapy found to be useful.

Thank you. What can of meds could be used to stop the vomiting? He will vomit up to 50 times during an episode. Nothing seems to work for him.
