Question: hi my 4 year old son has clear rectal discharge which smells awfull. It happened 2 days ago as well. Any thoughts what it could be? Should i take him to emergency?

The cause of foul smelling rectal discharge could be due to various reasons.
1. Infection
2. Alteration or poor bacterial flora in the gut.
3. Ingestion of food articles which cannot be easily digested due to weak enzymatic action.
Identifying the cause is very important.
For that you need to get the following tests
1. Complete blood count.
2. Stool examination for parasites and blood.
3. Clinical abdominal examination /ultrasound of the abdomen.
4. Liver function tests.
Once the cause is detected then specific treatment can be commenced.
