Child Started Teething, Has Small Red Raised Rash On Torso And Legs. Worrisome

Question: 6.5 month old has small red raised rash on torso and legs. She is also teething at the moment. Is a bit hot but doesn't seem to have too high a fever. She is quite irritable but seems to be more from teething than the rash?

Hi,

Thanks for writing to us.

I understand your concern.

Rashes in infant could be due to;
-infection which is mostly viral but could be bacterial as well.
-allergic reaction
-drug allergy.
-environmental exposure.
-any recent immunization.

I suggest you to get your baby examined by pediatrician as physical examination of rash is needed to ascertain cause.

In the meantime, apply calamine lotion 2 to 3 times a day.

Observe features like;
-increasing rash
-increase in fever
-irritability
-refusal of feed

Give acetaminophen as per dosage 15mg/kg if fever is above 100F.
Maintain hydration; give plenty of fluids.

For teething, I suggest you to massage her gums gently with damp cloth 3 to 4 times a day.
Acetaminophen will relieve teething pain as well.
