Child With High Level Of Red Blood Cell And Lymphocytes. Had Shoulder Surgery. Anything Serious?

Question: My son is 18 - his red blood cell and lymphocytes came back slightly high 5.45 and 41.4. He had Mono maybe 2 months ago, is an athlete and had shoulder surgery 4 months ago. Any cause for concern?
Dear patient,
The values are just slightly elevated, and indeed they may bear correlation with the infectious mononucleosis; this is supported by the fact that the type of white cells increased are lymphocytes, the ones that are increased with the Epstein Barr virus, caustive agent of mono. Probably just a follow up lab in several months might be indicated but otherwise, continue to be active. Care however, has to be taken with contact sports for the first 8 weeks given that the spleen can enlarge with mono and you want to avoid abdominal injuries.
