Child's EKG Showed Possible Atrial Abnormality. Given Holter Monitor. Any Ideas?
Question: MY 8 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER HAD AN EKG DONE CAME UP AS POSS LFT ATRIAL ABNOR. CARDO GUY IS GIVING HER AN 48 HR HOLTER. LOOKING ONLINE, AND YES I KNOW THAT'S BAD, I AM FINDING NOT TO MUCH ABOUT WHAT HE IS LOOKING FOR. HUSBAND IS ER/IM DR. HE SAYS IT'S BECAUSE HER HEAR GOES FASTER THAN SLOWER. ANY IDEAS OUTSIDE OF THE BOX? sick sinus?
Hello!
Thank you for the query.
According to information you have provided, in you daughter ECG there was probably found something called "p mitrale". This means that the p wave in ECG is diphasic. It happens when either there is some intraatrial conduction defect or (what is more probable) left ventricular hypertrophy (enlargement). Left ventricular hypertrophy ca be caused by mitral valve stenosis.
Holter ECG can only find if there are any conduction abnormalities, but will not tell about left atrial muscle. What should be done is heart ultrasound, it will tell how big is atrial muscle and if there is any stenosis.
Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards
