Constipation And Stomach Distension, PEG-3350 And Electrolytes, Barium Test., No Bowel Movement
My mother, 91, is going to have a test tomorrow and she is drinking the PEG -3350 AND ELECTROLYTES to prepare for a berium ?? test where she will drink the berium and they will watch it go through her intestines. She started the liquid at 4PM, 8 oz every 10 minutes and has taken a little over 1/2 the total solution. Her stomach is very distended and no feeling of needing to have a BM. How soon should we see her ready to have a BM? She has had terrible constipation for a week. Thanks, XXXXXXX
Polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution is used to clean the bowel before colonoscopy, a barium x-ray, or other intestinal procedures.
Polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution is a laxative solution that increases the amount of water in the intestinal tract to stimulate bowel movements. This medication also contains potassium, sodium, and other minerals to replace electrolytes that are passed from the body in the stool.
This solution should not be taken by patients having severe constipation, bowel obstruction. In case the doctor had not been informed that your mother has severe constipation, he should be informed at the earliest.
Get emergency medical help if your mother has these serious side effects:
1. severe stomach pain or bloating;
2. no bowel movement within 2 hours after use; or
3. gagging, choking, or vomiting.
I hope this helps.
