Di Agonized For Lever Cancer, Suggested Sorafenat. Done CT Scan. Recommend Treatment?
Question: Hi my father has been diagonized for Lever Cancer .CT scan report attached ,He has been suggested for tablet Sorafenat . Composition of tablet is sorafenib
Our Doctor has suggested that it can't be cured now and rest at home is preferable along with relatives.We want him to lead the painless life without any complications and pain.So far he is ok . Please suggest whether he can take the recommended medicine and also suggest things we need to take care so that he can lead painless life.Normally how long such patients can survive ?

As the reports suggest your father has an advanced liver cancer. Treatment modalities such as surgery, liver transplantation, radio frequency ablation are not suitable in this situation. Trans arterial chemo embolisation is also not possible as there is portal vein thrombosis and as the disease has spread to the lungs. The only option is Sorafenib.
This is only aimed at reducing the symptoms by reducing the tumor burden and is not for curing the disease. If pain is a significant symptom not relieved with oral medications, take care of his diet. Protein supplements will help.
The average survival is around 8-10 months, but if sorafenib works (it works in 27-40% of patients), the life expectancy may increase by another 4-6 months. A supportive and encouraging family is the need of the hour.
