Diabetic. High Creatinine Level. Should We Go For Dialysis?

Question: Hi Doc, My father is 59 years old and he s been with diabeties for 35 year.. He has diabetic nephrophathy no. His Creatinine level is 5.7. Should we rush for a dialysis now?
H,
Welcome to the forum.
Even though creatinine level alone is not an indicator for dialysis, this level is quite high.
Need for dialysis depends on fluid retention, serum potassium levels and so on.
He needs to be under regular followup with a nephrologist, get examined to look for fluid retention, check BP and serum potassium.
He will guide you the right time to start dialysis. Once started, kidneys usually give up and he may become dialysis dependent.
Please discuss all these issues with your doctor.
Hope this helps,
Best regards
