Do Excessive Use Of Antibiotics Cause Resistance?
Question: Stepped on a rusty screw which went through my rubber sole shoe and went into the ball of my foot. Went to the er but I am concerned because the doctor did nothing but wash around the outside of the puncture. Had an xray which showed that it missed the bone but come very close. xray showed no paritcles but that does not mean there is not any bacteria because it was a rusty nail and went through the sole of the shoe, Doctor did not believe in antibiotics because he believes they are over used. I told him I have not had an antibiotic since XXXXXXX 2010 and I did not believe I had built up any resistance to antibiotics, So he did not give me an antibiotic or prescribe one. Was he right.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern. I think Doctor is right. If frequently antibiotics will be used without need then bacteria will develop resistance to antibiotics so these should be used judiciously. However if your wound is contaminated as you are saying then a broad spectrum antibiotics can be given prophylactically. Tetanus prophylaxis is more important then antibiotics.
You can discuss with your doctor about it.
Hope your query get answered. If you have any clarification then I will be happy to help you.
Wishing you a good health.
Take care.
