Do Steroids Cause Problem In Eyes?

default
Posted on Mon, 31 Aug 2015
Question: I have had 20/15 vision all my life until last year. I blamed it on computers as I do a lot of work on them but a female in Walgreens one day told me steroids shots caused her eye problems . I went to see a optometrist to find out I had 20/40 vision. I see great from far away but cant make out anything close up like reading without readers. If the shots are responsible for damage to my eyes, will the medical problem be covered through my insurance to maybe get Lasik surgery and blue cross/blue shield pay for it since the medical issue caused the vision problem and I have a cataract in my right eye.

Brief Answer:
Steroid shots are not responsible for difficulty in near vision.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to Health care Magic.

I am Dr. DADAPEER K, an Ophthalmologist and I answer health problems related to eye.

I reviewed your history.
It seems from the history that you are having difficulty in reading for near without glasses with good distance vision.
This condition is called as presbyopia. This occurs basically because of age related changes in the eye thus decreasing the power of accommodation. This condition is seen after the age of 40-45 years. This requires treatment by use of spectacles for reading or for near only. The steroid shots are not known to cause this problem.

The cataract may be in its initial stages and may not require surgery. The use of steroid shots may be responsible for cataract.

And as par my knowledge goes almost all the insurance companies pay for cataract surgery. Hence regarding cataract surgery depending on the terms and conditions of your insurance company you can get cover for it.
