Do Swollen Lymph Nodes, Burning Sensation During Urination After Unprotected Sex Suggest STD?

Question: I'm a 27 year-old male. I've had sex with 5 women, all in long-term relationships.

1 month ago, post-breakup and a little drunk, I had unprotected sex (oral, vaginal, anal) with a rather promiscuous girl. By her own admission, she’s been with “over 100 guys”. She says she gets tested regularly, the last time being just before the last guy before me, and she was clean.

24-48 hours after the act, all of the lymph nodes in my body were swollen and only mildly painful. 1-2 days later, my penis started burning while urinating and sometimes on it’s own and I felt the urge to urinate more often. In addition, my testicles were swollen, there was an intermittent tingling from my scrotum to my anal area, I had muscle and joint pain, pins and needles in my hands and feet (they also became very cold) and my throat felt full but not sore. On the 4th night, I had chills throughout the night. It was terrible.

That was the worst of it and things started improving from there. However, I still have burning sensation only while urinating, the urge to urinate more often (though not as bad), occasional mild joint pain and slight tingling in my feet (although that may be a nervous thing since I only really feel it when I think about it). There have also been a few days since then where my lymph nodes in the groin area as well as my testicles were swollen, and there was pain under my ribs (I’m guessing in my kidneys).

In the mean time, I did go to a clinic to get tested for UTI, gonorrhea and chlamydia. This week (week 4) I got the results all negative. Yesterday my gums were swollen and today the lymph nodes in my throat under my jaw are swollen, with one side very painful. I admit I’m not the best with dental hygiene. Nonetheless, I’m getting pretty nervous.

Could this be HIV? Does the sequence of events, timeline and symptoms point to that possibility? What else could it be?

Brief Answer:
Gonorrhea and chlamydia ruled out.Other STD/ HIV yet to be ruled out.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to HCM.
Thanks for posting your query.

You had tested for UTI, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia. All were negative already after 4 weeks. So you need not worry about these. Drink plenty of water to get relieved from the burning sensation during urination.
HIV would not have any manifestation within a day or week after the high risk contact. It will take not less than 3-4 weeks to have any manifestation if there is an infection.
At the same time you can not rely the words of these promiscuous girl that she is having regular check ups. STDs are more than 30 in number. All these diseases cannot be tested with blood tests alone. Some can be detected only by clinical examination or biopsy. More over there is lot of chances for her to remain in window period (having infection, blood test negative). So it is better for you to consult a STD physician and have a thorough examination and investigations at appropriate period and rule out the possibilities of STD/HIV.

Brief Answer:
urinary tract infection and throat infection to be thought of.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome back
I would like to see your urine report.
Possible urinary tract infection and throat infection came to my mind. Only by examination and investigations, we can predict the possibilities. As you had appointment with your Doctor, everything will go alright.
