Do Tingling Numbness In The Left Leg And Imbalance Require Medical Attention?

default
Posted on Mon, 18 Sep 2017
Question: I experienced numbness and a tingling sensation in left leg, dizziness and loss of balance for about 10 to 15 seconds while standing up. First time it's happened to me. I'm 75 years of age. Lately I've noticed my ears are plugged a lot. Am I at risk? I'm supposed to go on an airplane in 2 weeks for a 2 hour flight.

Brief Answer:
Advice to undergo EKG, CT brain and Carotid artery Doppler

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for trusting HealthcareMagic,

The most important concern that needs to be ruled out with your symptom background is a Transient Ischemic attack (Mini Stroke). During a XXXXXXX stroke, the blood flow to the brain is temporarily cut off without causing any permanent damage. A CT brain and carotid Doppler study are recommended. If confirmed, initiation of aspirin therapy is required to prevent a future stroke.

An EKG is also recommended to rule out cardiac problems including coronary artery disease or cardiac arrhythmias.

Sometimes postural hypotension (especially if you are on antihypertensive medications) can trigger such symptoms. However, It is important to rule out the serious possibilities first. So please be advised to follow up with the urgent care.
