![default](/r/images/default.png)
Question: Sure, thank you.I am 4 years post thyroidectomy, and this last week I went in for a yearly scan with 4.8 milicuries of I-131. Is it normal to have a sore throat after taking the I-131 iodine? What causes this?

Brief Answer:
Hello
Detailed Answer:
Good day,
Noted your concern. I presume that you had total thyroidectomy and had a radio idoine ablation done preiously. Hence you are doing the yearly diagnostic scan with low dose I 131. This is only a diagnostic scan and doesnt caue sorethroat. A much higher dose is used for treatment ( ablation) which can emit radiation to surrounding tissues outside thyroid and may cause Sorethroat very occasionally. But the 4.8 mci I 131 is usually harmless
