Does Klonopin Have A Cumulative Effect?

Question: Hi,
I am on Klonopin 3 mg and i would like to know, since Klonopin is a cumulative drug (according to half life of this drug), if this cumulative effect is stronger once the drug has reached is steady plasma concentration state (maybe before there are more fluctuations in the concentration of the drug in the blood/body system and for the drug it's more difficult to be cumulative)
Thanks,
XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
No cumulative effect
Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for the query
Klonopin does not have cumulative effect, this is the main reason why it is safe when taken in excess. The half life of Klonopin is just about more than half a day, but when a patient has kidney dysfunction it can vary and sometimes lasting upto 2 days.
Now to answer your question. To maintain a steady state, especially when taken as an anxiolytic it is best given as a twice a day dose. One has to be careful because it can also act as a sedative which might hamper daily activities.
I hope I was of help, if you have any further queries please get back to me

Hi Dear,
Thank you very much for your information. As far as i know, half-life of elimination or Klonopin is between 18 hours to 50 hours or 19 hours to 60 hours (xanax is more or least 12 hours, not Klonopin!, so many books say that we can count more or least 30 to 40 hours. Am i right or do you have another source and everything in the Web is wrong? Please, if you have it, let me see a serious source. If i take 2 mg by night, then 0,5 mg in the morning and then 0,5 mg at 14 pm, why Klonopin hasn't cumulative effect? Even if i just take one dose at night, if half-life can be between a MINIMUM of 18 hours and a MAXIMUM of 50 hours (say again for example 30 hours) and the day has 24 hours, how could Klonopin avoid a cumulative effect? Last time, a doctor told me here that Klonopin is a "short acting" drug (!!!). What else? Excuse me, but as far as i was told HERE, steady state of Klonopin does not depends on taking it twice a day, now it results that if i talk to three different doctors i can have three different versions of the same med. Please just answer if you are sure of what you say and you have read many times about the subject.

Klonopin

Hello
Thanks for the query
Klonopin is definitely not short acting. But we do agree that the half life is highly variable. However your question was about maintaining a steady state, which I said was possible. Higher doses are required if taken as a single dose and lower doses when taken more than once a day. It take about 2 weeks to maintain the steady state.
We as nephrologist deal with these drugs quite often
Here is a PDF which I think will answer most of your doubts.
