Does Xanax Cause Low Blood Pressure?

My blood pressure is 113 over 59 (pulse 64)-after lunch, 107 over 59 (pulse 62)-after wake up in the morning. I am on Xanax and Atorvastatin. My height is 178cm, 100kg and I m 33 years old. My latest cholesterol reading is 4.4 with the bad one (LDL i think!) at 2.81. I was diagnosed with SVT (Supra ventricular tachycardia) and GAO (generalised anxiety disorder) and panic attacks. Is my BP reading normal or is considered low? Could Xanax cause low blood pressure? I have lost 5kg in the last 5 weeks because of exercise.

Hi,

Xanax (alprazolam) is a benzodiazepine medication used to treat anxiety disorders, panic disorders, and some forms of depression. It works by enhancing the effects of a neurotransmitter called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which helps to calm down the activity in the brain.

While Xanax is not known to directly cause low blood pressure, it can have an indirect effect on blood pressure by causing relaxation of the smooth muscles in the walls of blood vessels. This can lead to a decrease in blood pressure, especially if the dose of Xanax is too high or if it is combined with other medications that also have blood pressure-lowering effects.

Your blood pressure readings of 113/59 mmHg and 107/59 mmHg are within the normal range and do not indicate low blood pressure. However, if you experience symptoms such as dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting, it is important to inform your doctor as they may suggest adjusting your medication.

It is also worth noting that losing weight and engaging in regular exercise can have a positive impact on blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and overall cardiovascular health. However, it is important to consult with your doctor before starting any exercise program or making significant changes to your diet and medication regimen.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
