Does L-Arginine Help In Clearing Arteries?

default
Posted on Mon, 16 May 2016
Question: HI I am 62 years olf, female, have glaucoma ( taking xalacom and brimodine) no other drugs, take vitamin D when I remember. Past operations r hysterectomy and gall bladder removal. I recently had a heart health scan (MaxPulse) and my naturopath recommended that I take l-arginine to help clear my arteries - I showed level 4 buildup. Doing on-line research I see that l-arginine should be taken with l-lycine ( I've had cold sores years ago) and since I don't eat many greens I decided to try a protein supplement( rather than the Proaginine+ that he recommended) - Genuine Health fermented vegan proteins+ - I'll upload contents. Is this Ok for my health, will it help clean arteries in these dosages?

Detailed Answer:
Greetings and welcome to HCM. I understand your concern and thank you for your question.

Well, I really do understand your concern about your father has undergone a bypass surgery at the age of 74. You are 62 years old, and, although genetic factor has a strong linkage with the cardiovascular disease, this is not the main determinant. For instance, you are of female gender, which has its protective, "good" factors in cardiovascular disease.

L-arginine is a aminoacid which helps in the metabolism of the heart muscle. It really does not make any difference in "cleaning" the arteries, should they be already blocked. There are some good, effective and scientific, yet simple, tests that confirm or rule out cardiac and coronary disease. Therefore, since your preoccupation is real, I would recommend you to follow the below described tests:
- EKG - which helps depicting any problem in the cardiac electrical or conduction systems at resting state;
- echo cardiogram - which allows us to assess the function and size of various cardiac components;
- cardiac stress test - which allows us to assess whether there is a blockage within a given coronary artery, which gives its "alarm" when the heart is physically stressed.

If all these three tests come back negative, then there is nothing to worry about. If something is revealed by one or all of these tests, then further diagnostic and treatment measures may be required.

I hope I was helpful with my answer. Feel free to ask follow-up questions, as I would be happy to help.

Best regards,
Dr. Meriton
