Does Lithium Treatment Cause Thyroid Issues?

default
Posted on Tue, 24 Nov 2015
Question: I took lithium for about 10 years, but have been off of it for almost eight years now. After reviewing results of blood work at my annual exam, my primary care NP suspects hypothyroid and is running additional blood tests to be sure of what the problem is. Could years of taking lithium be the cause of my thyroid issues even though I have been off of it for so many years now?

Brief Answer:
Thyroid

Detailed Answer:
I understand what you are asking.

Yes indeed, thyroid problems tend to occur within 2 years of lithium treatment but it can occur much later also.
Women over 45 are more prone to it and the risk increases with age.
Furthermore, if you have thyroid auto antibodies in your blood such as

anti TPO (Thyroid Peroxidase)
anti Thyroglobulin

then the chances of thyroid problems are even higher.

Regardless, just check your blood levels now for TSH and Free T4 along with thyroid auto antibodies, and consult an Endocrinologist to discuss the best course of action.
