Does Metformin Cause Pancreatitis?
Question: if the pancreatitis is caused from taking metformin, will it stop by stopping taking the metformin? sorry the curser keeps jumping into the sentence.
Brief Answer:
Won't stop immediately, will prevent further damage
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
If a drug causes pancreatitis, stopping it will prevent further damage to the pancreas. But it might not necessarily stop the symptoms immediately. The on going pancreatitis might take days to weeks depending on how severely the pancreas are inflamed.
Metformin causing pancreatitis is very rare. so other causes should be looked for before attributing the pancreatitis to metformin like alcohol intake and presence of gall stones.
( a ct abdomen, triglyceride levels, calcium levels, thyroid levels should help)
