Does Brain Injury Cause Irregular Menstruation?
Question: Are there any studies to suggest that a traumatic brain injury could cause changes in the menstrual cycle? I am a 52 year old female who regularly gets a period (I was recently tested to see if I am in menopause - I am not). Since the accident my cycle has been weird. Did not have it for 2 months then had a really heavy bleed, then 2 weeks later bled again for 5 days. Had a uterine biopsy - normal. Bloodwork - normal. Waiting on results of vaginal ultrasound. Have previously been diagnosed with adenomyosis.
Brief Answer:
There are no studies as of date!
Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.
There are no studies which suggest that traumatic brain injury can cause menstrual irregularities. However, the stress associated with such an injury can cause changes in the cycle. I think you should follow up with the doctor on identifying the exact cause of these changes which could be hormonal or linked to the uterus itself as the brain as a possible origin is unlikely. With a history of adenomyosis, it could still result in these changes.
I hope this helps. I wish you well. Feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be. Exercise a calm, positive and optimistic mind set.
