1. From day to day, there is more variability in female hormones than male hormones. It's mainly because of the cyclical nature of ovulation. Growing follicles under the influence of FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) produce more and more estrogen. When the follicle is mature, the high estrogen levels trigger an LH (Luteinizing hormone) surge which causes ovulation. The ruptured follicle also produces estrogen but since it does not grow the level of estrogen reduces over the remaining fortnight. At this point the endometrium sheds because of falling estrogen levels and this is the fundamental reason why hormone levels fluctuate in females.
If ovulation stops for any reason as in oral contraceptive pill therapy, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and menopause - the hormone levels will stay the same throughout until the process resumes.
2. T3 is the active hormone which acts at the level of the cell in the nucleus. T3 is produced from T4 in the cytoplasm of target cells by de-iodinase an enzyme that activates the thyroid hormone converting T4- T3. T3 then binds to the nuclear receptor and produces its actions.
