Does Haemorrhoids Cause A High PSA Level In Blood?

Posted on Mon, 4 Jan 2016
Question: My psa level has been in the low 3 range until this past summer. It was 4.3. I had a biopsy at the urologist office. Happily 11 were negative 1 was suspicious (sent to pathology lab came back negative). This was in August. Went to Urologist last week took blood now my Psa is 5.6. He wants me to have another biopsy in March and MRI. Can my hemorrhoids be causing this psa level to rise ?

Brief Answer:
PSA not associated with hemorrhoids

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

You recently had blood work showing a gradual increase in your PSA. Your urologist did 12 biopsies and only one was suspicious. But on repeat the PSA is still increasing. PSA is a blood test looking specifically for a prostate antigen. This antigen is only found in the prostate so your hemorrhoids have nothing, wats so ever, to do with the elevated PSA. I agree with repeat PSA, biopsy and MRI. There is still lots of controversy about PSA and what they actually mean. For years an elevated PSA would cause automatic biopsy. But studies showed that urology was performing more biopsies and causing more harm than actually finding prostate cancer. So some urology have decided to not biopsy and to do something called watchful waiting. In other words not doing anything but repeating the PSA intermittently. The thought is if it is a fast growing malignancy you will find out soon enough. A slow growing prostate cancer will not usually cause death. Men with the slow growing prostate cancer die from something else before the cancer spreads.

At your age I would probably be more aggressive because at 49 if there is a malignancy it maybe more likely to be fast growing. So Proceed with the plan.
