Does High Doses Of Asperin Reduce Platelet Counts?

default
Posted on Fri, 30 May 2014
Question: I recently heard that high doses of Asperin can reduce platelet counts. I take a big Asperin everyday because I am a heart patient and my platelet count is going below normal each of the last two years. Is this a dangerous situation?

Brief Answer:
Kindly upload your blood test report (platelet)...

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,

I have gone through your query carefully and understood your concerns.

In order to evaluate your risk level, I should know first your platelet count. If they are:

- 100 X 10 (3)/mm (3) : low risk
- 50 to 100 X 10 (3) / mm (3): average
- lower than 50 : high risk
From our medical point of view, I ask my patients who are using Aspirin as you do, to run regular checking of their platelet count (together with other blood parameters).

As I do not have your platelet count, I am providing our medical guideline over the use of aspirin when platelet count is low. So,

- if platelet count is higher than 100000, we ask patients to safely use Aspirin
- if platelet count is intermediate (higher than 50000 but lower than 100000), we ask patients to continue using it but under strict follow ups.
- if platelet count is below 50000, we ask patients to stop using Aspirin

There is no problem if you cannot provide your platelet count. If your doctor has prescribed aspirin although your platelet count is low, it might be because there is no danger of using Aspirin at this moment. Regular check up of platelet count is needed.

All the best!
