Does High Viral Fever Cause A Low Platelet Count?
Question: Hello Sir,
My 4.8 years old daughter is suffering from seasonal viral fever. On first day when fever begins, we had her dengue and chikangunia test, which are negative. After two days when fever get lowers we had her CBC count tested which shows 1.27 lacs platelets. Which are lower than normal range, Then our family doctor advice another test after 6 hours which show 1.48 lacs platelets. And again after 12 hours shows 1.20 lacs platelets. We again had her dengue test yesterday which shows negative. Can you please suggest what we should do now. Is platelets down in viral fever too? She didn't have fever now.

Brief Answer:
No need to worry
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on Health care magic.
I have gone through your query and understand your concern. Let me insist you not to bother about the platelet count at all. Levels like 80,000-1,00,000 are perfectly acceptable. The mainstay of treatment would be to drink plenty of water and fluids and if hydration is proper I would not worry even in case of very low platelet count (like only 20,000) so long as there are no bleeding tendencies observed. In summary I would not even bother to check the platelet levels.
All you should do now is not to panic, give paracetamol in case of high temp, not test further, wait. The infection would subside in 5-7 days on its own.
Regards

Brief Answer:
Apply Zytee Lotion
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. Yes, such things can occur in viral infections. Apply some anaesthetic gel like Zytee Lotion topically a few times a day. Soon it will be fine. Rashes may also appear on the skin. Youmay apply Calamine lotion topically over those areas.

Brief Answer:
Do not bother about platelet count
Detailed Answer:
In case of Dengue like fevers the drop in platelet count typically occurs 2 days after the fever subsides. Thereafter it starts increasing again and usually normalizes in a week or so.
