Does Intake Of Nuedexta Help In Treating Chronic Bipolar Disorder?

Question: My psychiatrist wants to try Nuedexta for my chronic, daily rapid cycling bipolar disorder [not psychotic, paranoid or violent, but usually mixed state]. DNA testing revealed the bipolar gene and adverse reaction to many meds. I take only ativan, for bipolar, now. But take propranolol, chlorthalidone, guanfacine, and valsartan for volatile blood pressure. Any contraindications for Nuedexta for me? Any experience/knowledge with Nuedextra for bipolar?

Hello, and thanks for your question.

Nuedexta is not approved for use in bipolar disorder, so this strikes me as an odd choice. Further, genetic testing is not useful in the diagnosis of bipolar disorder (there is no one gene that causes it or is even significantly indicative of it). Nuedexta is used in people with pseudobulbar affect, a condition where people laugh and cry uncontrollably. If you have bipolar disorder, lithium or valproate are far more effective medications.
