Does Intake Of Quetiapine Help In Treating Schizophrenia?
My husband is on quetiapine 12.5 mg daily at 08 and again at 25 mg BID at 12 and 2000 hours. There is a warning re the elderly taking this drug so I am anxious and would like to have some background other than my own research when I talk to the doctor in charge.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.
Quetiapine is actually prescribed for many reasons. The purpose of the medication depends on the dosage range. For doses above 600mg, it treats schizophrenia. For doses 300mg-600mg, it acts as an antidepressant and mood stabilizer. At doses below 300mg, it functions as a calming and sleep medication, or for confusion in Alzheimers. Your husband is taking a total daily dose of less than 100mg, so it is being used for confusion associated with his Alzheimer's. You are right that there is a warning in its use in the elderly -- fortunately, the doses your husband is taking are very low, so the risk of adverse effects from this drug is very small. I hope this was helpful.
