Does Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Result In An Elevated ESR Count Of 67mm?

Posted on Fri, 25 Nov 2016
Question: Could nonalcoholic fatty liver disease cause an ESR of 67? I am in the process of being diagnosed for some kind of autoimmune or inflammatory response causing widespread pain, crushing fatigue, and "brain fog". I will see a rheumatologist next month. Meanwhile, an ultrasound revealed that I have mild fatty liver, which we have known. My liver enzymes are normal.

When I began having bouts of symptoms like this, I was much younger and thinner. In recent years, I have gained weight, which I know is the root of the fatty liver, and am committed to reversing that. So my question is, does this fully explain the elevated ESR? Am I on the right road to figuring out the pain and fatigue with visit to rheumatologist?

Hello,
Thanks for the query.
I have read your query and understand your concern.
I will answer your queries one by one.
High ESR can be caused by fatty liver as well as auto immune disorders also. Other reasons can also result in high ESR . In nutshell,it is very difficult to pin point a single cause and in fact it is a mix of various reasons.
Non alcoholic fatty liver ( NAFLD ) is generally caused by obesity, consumption of excess sugar and high lipid content of blood although there are other reasons also like consumption of many types of drugs.
The best and proper treatment of NAFLD is shedding of weight.
Your decision of consulting a rheumatologist, regarding your pain and fatigue,is absolutely correct.
I hope it helps, however you are most welcome to revert to me for any further query.
Best of luck
Thanks
