Does Persistent Intake Of Ciprofloxacin Lead To Uncomfortable Feeling In Stomach?

default
Posted on Wed, 24 Feb 2016
Question: Hi doc I am a male 26 years old.

In 2014 was prescribed diclofenac and also ciprofloxacin 500 mg for prostatitis and dental problems.

Diclofenac was prescribed on 3 to 4 occasions. Ciprofloxacin x 4 within the last year.

My abdomen has had a uncomfortable feeling since then although it may be worry.

I had the medication in a combination maybe even on a empty stomach a couple of times.

It's been a good 4 to 6 months since I have been the medication.

I have been to the doctor a number of times now and he has examined on the table my stomach.

I have had a FBC rbc wbc iron was fine haemoglobin also.

I'm.worried about a stomach ulcer if it has formed.

Bloods are fine though stools are normal colored
Just worried now because of the uncomfortable feeling.

Please give your thoughts or a blood trst for ultimate piece of mind

4 to.5 months off medication. Had a crp test in September also was 2.

Had several examinations

Brief Answer:
Might be due to gastritis, cap omez 20 mg

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome.
I have gone through your query.
Uncomfortable feeling in the stomach might be due to gastritis.
The drugs are capable of causing gastritis, but I assume you have taken the agents as mentioned by the doctor. And it is less likely to be culprit.
Exactly what symptoms do you have? Is it heartburn, indigestion, nausea ?
Have you taken any medication for gastritis.

Presently I would have initially treated you for gastritis.
I would suggest you to avoid spicy food, alcohol, and smoking, I think that you are already following this.

Eat bland diet, eat diet rich in fibre, avoid meat for few days, do not lie down immediately after food, walk for 15 minutes post food. Avoid eating heavy meals, instead go for small frequent meals. Avoid a lifestyle in which you sit in one place for long. Make sure you move around and have at least a 30-minute walk as part of your daily exercise
I would suggest you to take capsule omeprazole 20 mg twice daily 1/2 hour before food for 1 week twice a day.
You can take over the counter antacids three times a day as well.
You should take probiotics like sporolac or ecobion once a day and eating yoghurt which will be beneficial. Kindly follow the measures for 15 days, your symptom should subside.

I would have suggested you to follow this for a 15 days, and observe for any improvement, and if it persists you can go for endoscopy and test to rule out H pylori infection.

This provisional advice provided by me is based entirely on the input provided to me. I would suggest examination by the doctor.

Hope this helps.
Take care.

Symptoms is just a uncomfortable feeling in tummy.

Is it a ulcer? Or can this be ruled out

I did have symptoms such as flatulence diarrhea early after antibiotics but that has calmed down and back to normal now

Brief Answer:
Have you previously tested specifically for H pylori

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Good to hear from you.
Complete blood count(CBC) will not be helpful in specifically detecting H pylori. H pylori may be present with normal CBC.
Have you undergone blood antibody test specifically for H pylori?
Based on the information, I feel it is gastritis, and not ulcer.
Presently, I would recommend you to follow the measures as suggested. And observe for improvement.

If the symptoms persist, then we can decide on the requirement of further investigation.

Hope this helps.
Take care.
