Does Removal Of Taste Buds Help In Controlling The Appetite?

default
Posted on Fri, 15 Apr 2016
Question: Will removing taste buds help control my appetite? I have a tendency to eat a lot and whenever I am hungry I eat pretty much anything that is nearby, not taking in account times there are in a day that designated that everyone else 'normally eats' i.e breakfast lunch and dinner. I do skip meals sometimes e.g breakfast most of the time due to 'not managing my time well' but as with my current profession I just get told it is an excuse and I need to manage my time better. Also bringing snacks such as apples, or protein bars is what I was told by a current provider that I am seeing.

Brief Answer:
Bulimia is a possibility.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome To HCM. I am Dr Anshul Varshney. I understand your concern.
Removing the taste buds is not the treatment for excessive food cravings.
It so not a practical approach to the treatment.
Your symptoms are suggestive partially of Bulimia. Your binge eating disorder is a psychological issue only.
I would recommend following to you:
1. To take small frequent meals and to include your breakfast, lunch and dinner in these meals only. Avoid heavy meals.

2. Increase fruits, green leafy vegetables in diet.

3. Eat apple or cucumber whenever you just have craving.

4. Always brush your teeth after you eat. Study says that by doing this food cravings can be controlled.

5. Exercise regularly and do meditation.

Now theses were the general thoughts and opinion that you must already be knowing.

The medical management with drugs is indicated in cases where there is no response to these life style measures.
So in severe cases we use SSRI like Fluoxetine as well anotyer drug known as Topiramate.
These both drugs are off labeled use for food cravings as well as weight loss.
But remember drugs should be used only in cases when other measures fail.
Please share my opinion with your doctor.
If you have any further query, please ask me.
