What Is The Treatment For Epilepsy?

Good evening, age 39, 260lbs, male, email YYYY@YYYY .... I have epilepsy (Tonic Clonic)(Grand mal). I have gained approx 25 pounds when switching to trileptal.My neurologist wants to help that by putting me on Topamax. So Iread everything I have to take and the side effects are the worst I ve seen yet. Is there any different drugs to take that would cause weight loss or a diet pill to help, Thank you, edward venable

Hello,

To answer to your question we might need to know more about your epilepsy. Since what age do you have this desease? Did you do any further exams like MRI?? are the results of it normal?

About the treatment the indication to change the treatment are when the patient can not support the side effects and the most important the recidive of the crisis besides the usage of a treatmant.

All the antiépileptic drgs unfortunatelly have side effects. Because by definition epilepsy is an abnormal syncrone exitation of a group of brain neuron all the treatments are based on calming down the nervous system and giving like feeling depressed, tired, sleepy;

The drugs that exites the nervous system by definition cause also weight loss. To anwer your question none of antiepileptic drugs may cause weightloss.

Their aim is to decrease the frequency of the crises. We recomand you a good dietics folow up to improve your daily food.

Hope I have answered your queries. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Jora Xhaxho
