Does Severe Body Itching Indicate Uremic Encephalopathy?
Question: Male, 73, who has previous history with heart disease, Renal Cancer (1 removed) and diabetes. Recently had petechiae rash on both legs with severe itching. However, itching has now spread to other parts of body with no visual symptoms other than significant sleeping during the day. Concerned that this is related to ESRD and potential need for dialysis. Could this relate to uremic encephalopathy or the build-up of Phosphorus in the bloodstream from toxin buildup?
Brief Answer:
Could be related to uremia
Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for the query
Renal failure is usually associated with itching however along with that there are other symptoms like loss of appetite, nausea and loss of weight. What is unlikely is petichiae. Petichiae is usually seen when one has low platelets or allergy. Here is how you should go about it
1. Get a renal function test done along with that I also recommend you to get complete blood count and urine routine done
2. Get an ultrasound abdomen to see for chronicity of the kidney
3. Continue to take anti inflammatory medicines prescribed
I hope I was of help, if you have any further queries please get back to me
