Does Swelling In The Right Wrist Require An ER Consultation Despite Taking Clindamycin?

default
Posted on Tue, 3 Oct 2017
Question: I went to urgent care late Friday with pain and swelling in in my left wrist. Yesterday my right wrist started with the same systems and now both wrists are extremely painful. The diagnosis on Friday was cellulitis of the wrist; Diabetes mellitus. Prescribed clindamycin which I am taking along with other medications.
Should I head for the emergency room because of the second wrist or see how it goes the rest of the day?

Brief Answer:
Diabetes with cellulitis

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Diabetes with cellulitis is a dangerous combination. In my view IV (Intra Venous) broad spectrum antibiotics should be initiated especially if there is progression. Insulin can be administered on sliding scale as an alternate to metformin during the cellulitis to have a sustained and tightly controlled blood sugar level during this stress. Plain x rays should also be advised to look for any bone involvement.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
