Is It Safe To Take Metrogyl For Tooth Ache?

My wife is a type 2 diabetic for more than 20 yrs-takes insulin 30/70 in the morning before breakfast and Glynase XL 10 thrice a day after food. She had some tooth problem last month and had some filling up done.lately for the last 6-7days she developed tooth pain. The gums there are slightly swollen. Can she take metrogyl 400 to relieve the pain? She is 70yrs old and weighs 54kg./ Mr.Parthasarathy

Hi,

Since your wife had a tooth filling done last month, it could be probably for a cavity / caries (need further clinical details for confirmatory diagnosis) and now, she is experiencing tooth ache associated with swelling of gums. This may be due to an infection at the site or breakage of a part of the tooth filling leading to pain and swelling. As she is a diabetic, chances of infection are more. A tooth X-ray might be suggested in selected cases as a part of further investigation.

Metrogyl is an antibiotics that may be used for treatment of infections of gums and teeth, but Metrogyl has no effect on immediate pain control. For relief of pain, she has to take a pain killer. I would suggest to consult a dental surgeon for further clinical examination of the site (leads to confirmatory diagnosis), and he / she could decide on the best pain killer, antibiotics (if needed) and further treatment plans.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
