Does The Yellowness Of Eyes After Using Visine Go Away Or Is It Serious ?

Question: My son who is 22 had slight yellow in his eyes after using visine for months everyday..he was studying on the computer alot and his eyes became bloodshot. He used visine 2 X a day for months.. his eyes got a little yellow in the whites so he stop it. The yellow look is on the sides and underneath the lid. You XXXXXXX not noticed this looking straight at him. He feels fine and the yellow is starting to go away and less glassy. The 2 dr. he went to is doing a lot of liver test & hep test plus others.. we had two Dr's. look at them in the clinic ..but he is not jaundice by what the 1st Dr. said. We had asked him if he thought he was..he didn't even noticed his eyes looked yellow until we asked him about it.they are better now too.. he said more conjunctivitis and ordered some test. throat culture and auto immune test. the auto immune test is be/c he asked what else is going on with my son.. we mentioned the allergies from mold.some food intolence. indigestion now and then and his tonsils..when he was younger he did get some rashes under his arms and one time around his neck that swelled. One Dr. gave him antibiotic then and antihistime..it cleared up. when he got older he was working on losing some weight be/c he was getting obese my son at 16.. The rash never came back when he got older and loss alot of weight with diet & exercise. So that is the reason I guess the Dr. #1. was thinking more auto immune going on...My sons skin looks fine pinkish healthy..and not yellow like jaundice.. Now the #2 Dr. we saw be/c we had to go back to get a throat culture .( which came out neg). keep going on about my sons one tattoo..that it could be Hep C from the tattoo.. but that was three years ago my son got the tattoo..I went with him and we saw that they used new needles and it was a place that was known to be clean and sterile..My son had the HIB vaccine when he was little too for HEP. B.. I can't see how this could happen from a tattoo 3yrs ago and he never felt ill and feels fine now.
His eyes are getting better since the first Dr.#1 gave him drops for conjunctivitis. Would they get better if he had Hep?...We are all so worried until we get test results now..I have a nephew with Gilberts..maybe it's that but my nephew said he was tired from that..My son is not tired..has a good appetite..he works at the gym everyday and does cardio and feels fine..
I can't eat now with this worry and I feel sick now with stress and my son is so worried be/c the Dr. # 2 scared us so naming all these things and kept talking about Hep C from tattoos..we get the test back tomorrow hopefully everything will be fine. The first Dr. mentioned that he didn't look jaundice too and he should be tested for auto immune..since his tonsillitis were acting up and that runs in our family from the tonsils problems..from thyroid to auto immune..my son weighs 260 , 6' and big bone and always battles with his weight..he had lost 100 lbs 3 years ago when he weighed 300lbs on his own went from a size 46 size pants to a 34 pant size..in a year..and I am so proud he did that.. it took a year...but now this past 2 years he gain 30 of it back..he trys with exercising every day..
His tonsils he gets those white things on them and coughs them up when they get hard.. he gets allergies alot from mold and trees and the white things on his tonsils come and go with his allergies but they have been coming back more with his eyes being blood shot lately. the slight yellow was under his eye lids are more when you pulled his eye lid down or he looks up..very light yellow and not the whole eye..and if you looked straight at him you couldn't see they were even yellow ..only under certain lights. That's all he had..Our mind is going crazy now trying to figure this out..I keep thinking the visine had something do with this..or throat..he was stressed with college alot too..now my son doesn't like the other doctor and doesn't want to go back there..My son wants to get the results over the phone and maybe we will go else where..that is how much they put fear in us there ! Do you think everything will be ok?..since the yellow is going away and he feels fine ...wouldn't it had got worse by now if it was Hep or something serious..he eats, feels fine, but now with all this worrying its been very stressful for us all...Oh we eat very healthy here.We live in Sarasota Florida..get sunshine, eat organic vegtables and some organic meats..fresh brew organic XXXXXXX tea everyday with no sugar..never fast food or soda..spring water..I am 54 yrs. old weigh 122-124 @ 5'4..so eating healthy is very important for me and my family..I believe more in natural medicene..I just started my son on milk thistle tea now.. oh my son does take vit.d3 1,000 iu..and Vit.C sometimes fish oil omega 3..thank you.. and I would really like to hear your opinion or maybe you can direct us better on what to do..can this jsut go away with his eyes and be nothing..I thought of gallbaldder as well but he has no pain there....Nancy

Hello and thank you for submitting your question.

Your question is a very good one and I will try to do my best to give you information and recommendations regarding what is going on. I understand that you have a lot of anxiety regarding what is going on here and I will reassure you of many things.
Left regarding the changes which have been observed in his eyes this could certainly just be a very mild case of conjunctivitis. Conjunctivitis can sometimes happen as part of an allergic response and sometimes both allergy and a slight bacterial infection can lead this to be more of a persistent thing.

I am more inclined to think that what he is suffering from is the conjunctivitis. I am really not convinced that he has any disease involving his liver including hepatitis. I understand why you have become very concerned because the discussion of hepatitis has been raised in the process of him seeing his positions.

I am also not convinced that he has some type of autoimmune disease. He has had some illnesses in the past which do not necessarily reflect some type of immune deficiency or autoimmune disorder. Let me again reassure you of that.

I would encourage you to go to the physician's office to receive the test results and discuss the findings of the tests as well. I understand sometimes as physicians we do not do the best job at communicating and perhaps this is part of how your son feels related to the physician which he does not want to visit anymore. I would encourage both of you to attend the appointment and talk about all the test results. I am very very confident that he does not have hepatitis.

The results of the blood tests should be back within a couple of days. Hopefully you can attend an appointment with the doctor to discuss them. Also you mentioned that your son received the H I B vaccine as a young child. This is not a hepatitis vaccine. Hepatitis vaccine is a separate vaccine from that. HIB covers haemophilus influenza type B and not hepatitis B. I recommend you check with his doctors to see if he has been immunized against hepatitis. If not he should complete the three shot series of hepatitis vaccines.

Again I thank you very much for submitting your question. I hope my answer has provided you with some good information and reassurance. If you have any additional questions I would be happy to address them.

Regards,
