Does Treated Anal Warts Spread To Partner During Intercourse?

default
Posted on Tue, 6 May 2014
Question: I have been exposed to the HPV virus. I had anal warts that were surgically removed about 2 years ago and have been clean since then. What are the chances of a partner contracting this virus from me and what are the medical ramifications. I was told i could not transmit unless I had a breakout but I also heard that is not true. On WebMd it stated that this type of HPV would not result in cervical cancer. What would happen to my female partner if she got it from me?

Brief Answer: See below Detailed Answer: Hi and thank you so much for this query. You need to have active lesions shedding the viral particles for your partner to contract the disease. If you have been clean for the last 2years, then the chances of contaminating your partner are almost inexistent. Not all types of HPV viruses are associated with cancers. The most commonly implicated type are 16 and 18. Others like 6 and 11 mostly cause genital and anal warts and are not related to cancers. Because you had warts, it might have been type 6/11 and these are not generally very much implicated in cancer development. How it manifests in your partner depends on the type. If they are the types that do not cause cancer but warts, she may develop warts. If they are the types that cause cancer, she may go on to develop cancer. In any case, only the evolution can give the definite answers to this. I hope you find the above information useful. I wish you and your partner well.
