Experienced Severe Gas Like Stabbing Pain In Lower Back And Abdomen. Feeling Bloating And Tightness. What To Do?
Question: Hi Doctor, I am a female 42 years old, mother of twins, had a caesarian op 3 yrs ago, with no chronic ailments. Last evening and through the entire night i experienced severe gas like stabbing pain in my lower back and also lower abdomen. I have not eaten anything other than home food which is hygenic but maybe a little slice of mango which i am tolerant to. There was stomach bloating and and a feeling of tightness in the same regions too. I tapped the area with my fingers and there was that hollow sound indicating gas. I was perplexed as its a strange region for gas to be trapped. The pain has now subsided but in case it recurs tonite what do you recommend?
Hi,
I went through the details provided with diligence. My comments are as follows:
Please be careful of your diet and see what you are comfortable with and use them. I am hopeful this was just a one off event and is unlikely to recur.
There is a possibility of adhesions from the previous surgery which might prolong bowel movement and give rise to such events or if due to weakness in the abdominal wall a hernia has developed. You will need to visit your physician if it recurs.
Hope this helps you. Let me know if you need clarifications.
Take care

Thanks, i have had my physician check me , and he has given me some tablets for gas and acidity (including rantec) and said to see the results for next 3 days, failing which he may recommend some tests. At the moment i am still experiencing slight discomfort in the lower abdomen and have not passed a stool as yet since yesterday. I am usually constipated. I havent shared your opinion with him as yet, but am concerned about it as well just in case pain flares up again. What are the symptoms of hernia and how is it cured? Also what diet should i follow as I'm a non-vegetarian. Also what should i do whilst (if) the pain is on despite the gas medicines at night? please advise.
If you are usually constipated and do not move bowels for a day that is fine. If you are passing gas from bottom that is fine too. A hernia usually presents with a swelling in the abdomen or groin area that increases in size while exerting pressure like coughing.
Since you are a non-vegetarian, you could choose to have more of soups, and white meat instead of red meat. Make sure the food is cooked well.
Avoid spicy and oily foods for a few days until things settle down.
Do not hesitate the urge to pass stools. If you feel so, please empty your bowels. If the pain persists, you may take anti-spasmodics like Dicylomine. This is a prescription drug.
