Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

Absence of period is called amenorrhoea in medical term. It is quite physiological to be amenorrheic while women are breast feeding. This is named as Lactational Amenorrhoea (LA).

Regular breast feeding also acts as natural contraception. It gives protection near about 98% against unwanted pregnancy. Though, she needs to undergo one home pregnancy test to exclude possible pregnancy.

On stopping breast feeding, her period will resume within 1-2 months. If she does not get it, you need to consult with gynecologist for relevant investigation and take prescribed medication to induce her period in exclusion of pregnancy.

Hope, it helps for your information. If you have any other query, you can freely ask me.

Wish her good health & take care yourself.

Regards,
Dr Soumen
