Question: Hello Doctor,
My son is 1.1 year old. He weighs 10 kgs and 75 cms tall. Recently he had a swelling on the outer right palm. The area turned red and had swollen. I had introduced egg for the first time to him 3 days back before this happened. So, i thought this could be an egg allergy. But we were also confused if it was an ant bite too. and yesterday i see his right leg complelty swollen and ankle area turning red. It strongly looked like an insect/mosquito bite. Not sure though. I have not introduced any new food as such. I have been apply lacto calamine lotion as suggested in the past. Can you please let me know why this has happended and what should we do now. Do u suggest any medication?

Hi XXXXXXX

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

There are two possibilities here.

1. Insect bites like mosquito bites. As the swellings are present on exposed
parts (palm and leg), they are looking like insect bites like mosquito or ants.

2. Another possibility is allergic skin reaction to egg. But allergic reactions
usually present with urticaria or redness of skin associated with itching.

But the completely swollen right leg is a concerning symptom.

Is there any trauma to that limb?

Is it painful to touch?

Is child having fever?

If you send the photographs of the rash on palm along with the leg swelling and ankle, it will be more helpful to advise you in a better way.

I advise you to stop egg at present temporarily.

You can continue applying lactocalamine over rash.

If child is having itching, you can give an oral antihistamine like hydroxyzine in prescribed dosage.

Physical examination is important to know the type of rash and the reason for leg swelling.

Hence I advise you to consult pediatrician for examination and for prescription of medication.

Hope I have answered your query, if you have any clarifications please let me know along with the details I have asked.

Regards.

Hi XXXXXXX

Thank you for getting back.

So the swelling with rash is looking like an allergic skin reaction could be due to insect bite or egg.

Physical examination by your pediatrician will tell the nature of rash and swelling.

Thank you very much for contacting me on Healthcare Magic.

Wish you and your family good health.

Best Regards.
