Have 450 Calcium Level And Told To Have Parathyroid Operation. Feel Tired And Foggy-minded. Suggest?
Thanks for writing to us.
The normal blood calcium level is 8.5 to 10 mg/dl. Anything beyond this is hypercalcemia. Hypercalcemia could be due to
Hyperparathyroidism
tumors metastasising to bones
multiple myeloma
pagers disease
sarcoidosis
Vitamin D excess
thyrotoxicosis
drugs like diuretics lithium etc.
Hyperparathyroidism can have mild to severe symptoms. Symptoms may be mild and nonspecific, such as a feeling of weakness and fatigue, depression, or aches and pains. With more severe disease, a person may have a loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, constipation, confusion or impaired thinking and memory, and increased thirst and urination. Patients may have thinning of the bones with increased risk of fracture and there could be increased risk of kidney stone too.
So as there is a suspicion of hyperparathyroidism that is why surgery has been advised. however prior to getting surgery a proper investigation should be done to rule out other causes too
Hope that helped.
Take care
