There are many causes of this lesion.
Apthous ulcer is the most common.
It is very painful.
It most commonly occurs in immunocompromized patient like diabetes mellitus.
This ulcer spontaneously heals within few days.
Local use of salicylic acid sometimes help.

The other possible causes in old age are fungal or bacterial infection, secondary syphilis, Crohn's disease, pemphigous & some malignancy.

It will be wise for you to consult your physician & get examined.
