Have Diabetes. Please Advise On Blood Sugar Level And Urine Sugar Level.
Thanks for the query.
You have provided me with good information.
You have done blood test which shows blood sugar levels of 180mg/dl and Urine test shows 1.0.
As I believe that more information helps a physician reach an accurate diagnosis, I would like to ask you whether the blood sample was given in the fasting state, at any random time or 2 hours after meals. This information would help me guide you better.
Generally, if you had given a fasting sample, the normal values would be between 70-100 mg/dL. A level between 100-125 mg/dL would indicate impaired glucose tolerance and levels above 126 mg/dL would indicate diabetes.
If it was a random or a post prandial sample, the normal values would be less than 140 mg/dL. A level between 140-200 mg/dL would indicate impaired glucose tolerance and levels above 200 mg/dL would indicate diabetes.
Thus, if you had given a fasting sample, this reading indicates that you are diabetic. However, if this was a random sample or a post prandial sample, it indicates that you have impaired glucose tolerance. This means that you are not diabetic and by taking appropriate measures, you can significantly reduce your risk of developing diabetes.
The Benedict’s Urine test is a test which shows the presence of glucose in the urine. Although generally, the test is positive when the blood sugar is increased by more than 180mg%., the threshold is different in different people. This is a non specific test and is not used much these days.
I would suggest the following:
a. Lifestyle modification is the most important step that you can take at this stage. This would comprise of:
b. Taking a well balanced, nutritious diet. This should be low in fat, low in refined sugar and salt.
c. Exercise regularly for atleast 50 minutes daily. This will help you lose weight and will help control the situation better.
I would also recommend that you consult your Lipid profile
2.Kidney function Test
3.Blood Pressure
4.Eye examination to have a baseline status of the retina
Hope I have answered your query. I will be available for follow up queries.
