Question: I have vaginal irritation which causes itchiness and inflammation of outer labia. There is thickening of outer layer of labia skin, is this a normal vaginal infection? Is this something that I should be worried about?

Thanks for your query.
Various kinds of vaginal infection can cause itching and inflammation of the labia.
It is definitely not normal to have itching and inflammation of the labia.
You should consult a gynecologist to know the exact cause of the infection.
By examining you locally, and taking a swab and other tests, the diagnosis can be pinpointed.
Common infections are -
1. Fungal
2. Trichomonas, a parasite
3. Bacterial vaginosis
4. Due to hormonal imbalance ( specially around 40 ), local skin gets atrophied and prone to infections.
5. Have your blood sugars tested also to rule out diabetes

In general, do not vigorously clean or rub the affected parts.
Avoid keeping private parts damp or wet.
Use cotton allergen free undergarments.
Avoid using latex condoms, medicated or perfumed tampons, tissues, cleansers etc.
