Having Swelling In Knee With Pain. Has Been Limping. Suggest Medication?

My father is having swlling in his right knee with pain. He is limping for last 2months. He is 53 yrs old. Could you please suggest proper medication.
Thanks for writing in,
There are many causes for pain with swelling in a single knee joint at this age group. Most common cause is Osteo-arthritis of knee joint. But it is advisable to rule out other causes also by taking a Xray of his knee joint. Xray will help us to find out whether his bones are normal or not. If there is no history of trauma or injury to his knee, no history of fever, no swelling in his foot, no other joints involvement then it should be mostly due to age-related wear and tear ie. osteoarthritis. I would suggest you to get your dad clinically examined by your doctor and follow his advise.
For osteoarthritis, weight reduction is the main treatment along with medicines to decrease pain like NSAID's - paracetamol, aceclofenac etc., Life style modifications like avoiding sitting cross legged, squatting, using indian type toilets will decrease the rate of progression of osteoarthritis. Exercises like quadriceps strengthening, swimming, straight leg raising will help in improving the muscle strength around the knee and will help in decreasing pain.
Wish him a good health.
