could you advise what's the probable and possible causes for this...and pls provide the info on curing medicines and processes..
Thank you for writing in. I was able to view the reports attached and it seems your nephew has Hodgkin's lymphoma.
Hodgkin's lymphoma is a disease where in the white blood cell (usually B-lymphocytes) become abnormal and multiply again and again without dying. This build up of cells can result in mass formation called a growth or tumour.
Though there are no defined causes, it is clinically related to the following:
-Certain infection like Epstein-Barr virus
-Weak immune system (inherited in families)
- Male gender
- Age group affected is 15-30years. But nowadays childhood Hodgkin's lymphoma is also seen.
- Gene factors
The current treatment plan consists of four courses of chemotherapy without
Radiotherapy in early stages (stage I- II); Radiotherapy may be needed in case of recurrent disease.
He needs to consult an oncologist and plan the next step of treatment. Don't worry, it’s a treatable disease with good prognosis.
I've tried my best to give best possible answer. Hope this suffices. Let me know if you have any more queries. I'll be happy to help you.
Wishing you and your nephew good health and happiness
Regards
Thanks for writing back.
Chemotherapy induced side effects will be present in the baby but its only till he is on chemotherapy.
These include anemia, decreased immunity power and hence infection, bleeding tendencies, difficulty in swallowing, oral ulcers and ulcers in gut.
But to have complete cure we have to bear with the short term side effects.
Chemotherapy is the only therapy that can be given in children with minimum side effects.
Radiotherapy is associated with many serious complications like secondary tumors, growth retardation, thyroid dysfunction and heart and lung damage which are permanent changes, hence we try to avoid them in children.
Recurrence is very rare in this disease.
Whether the tumour recurs or not depends on:
-tumor bulk,
-stage of disease,
-Presence of 'B" symptoms: unexplained fever, weight loss, drenching night sweats.
Usually, relapse free survival will be seen in up to 90-95% patients.
Surgery can be performed once the tumor shrinks after chemotherapy to prevent relapse.
But it is the decision of the treating surgeon after looking at an individual case.
Kindly talk to your surgeon to know what is the clinical stage of disease and what treatment regime they are planning to follow.
Hodgkin's lymphoma is called nowadays as Hodgkin's disease as it has excellent cure rate. Complete cure is possible.
No need to worry. Let me know if you have any more queries.
Regards.
The symptoms I mentioned can occur once you start chemotherapy.
But they will disappear once chemotherapy is over.
In India there are many institutes that are doing a very good work. Each metro has at least one good cancer institute. AIIMS, Delhi; PGI, Chandigarh; Tata Memorial, Mumbai; HCG & Kidwai Institute of oncology, Bangalore; Apollo Cancer Hospital, Hyderabad; Adayar Cancer Hospital. You may choose any city as this is curable if you can start at this stage. The nursing care and technology improves the outcomes in such cases.
Kindly talk to your doctor and collect information about them and then choose the hospital.
