How Accurate Is The HIV RNA Test 84 Days Post Exposure?

Question: To start out with I am a veteran with a little bit of PTSD that puts my always on guard. So I tend to get obsessively worried sometimes after surviving three combat tours I am always waiting for the shoe to drop and something to get me. So if my question is stupid or silly I am sorry in advance.

A while back I was at a friends house, his older sister was training to do home health care and asked if they could practice blood glucose test on me, I didn't think much of it so I let them do it. It was under the supervision of an RN who was training her. The needle was not reusable they said the machine crushes it so needles cannot be reused. The wiped down the machine with alcohol. I don't know how long between uses it had been. I didn't think much of it until I was watching a commercial about diabetic testing that said never share testing equipment. Then my mind went into full panic mode. I double checked with them that the needle was new, they said yes and the everything was cleaned between uses. my mind still wouldn't let this go. I didn't remember the exact date it took place but it was at least 85 days closer to 90. I read where HIV tests are conclusive at day 84. I took two home HIV tets Oraquick oral tests just for peace of mind on day 85 (worst case prob day 88-90) and they were both negative. Do I have anything to worry about in terms of HIV or HEP. I know that a finger prick is not the same as a needle becuase it doesn't store blood and a new needle was used. Please advise

Brief Answer:
You are at no risk for HIV

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

You were gracious enough to have someone do a blood test on you . The needle used was a new needle an therefore would not have any chance for infection with HIV. The testing unit is cleaned regularly and would not be possible to transmit HIV from the machine to you. You did perform the HIV home testing and these were also negative therefore you have no chance of contracting HIV.

Even with a finger prick with a new lancet you can't contract HIV through the lancet.

I can reassure you that you have no concerns for contracting HIV.

I hope I answered your question. Please contact us again if you have any further questions.

Thanks,

One more question to satisfy my mind

It was a a home not a clinic and the machine was wiped down with alcohol. so there is no chance of residual blood being there, I really don't know all the mechanics of it.

It is reassuring that you can't contract HIV thr/a lancet

Thanks again

Brief Answer:
Home monitor sterilized with Alcohol

Detailed Answer:
There is no way you can get HIV using a new lancet. The fact that they wiped the monitor with alcohol will also kill the HIV virus on contact. So there is no way you could contract HIV with a glucose meter.

I hope this reduces your anxiety. Contact me again if you have any further questions
