Is Elevated Bilirubin Level At Birth Harmful?

I have blessed with baby boy on 2 Mar 2011. Doctors made billirubin test on 7 Mar 2011 and found Billirubin Total as 15 mg/dL, Billirubin Direct as 1.1 mg/dL. They stated photo therapy from the same day i.e 7 Mar 2011. Again they made billirubin test on 10 Mar 2011 and found Billirubin Total as 13.2 mg/dL, Billirubin Direct as 1.6 mg/dL. Is ther any risk for my baby?

Hi, Your baby had suffered from Physiological jaundice which is a completely normal phenomenon seen in noeborns usually around 3-4 days of life and peaks around a week postnatal age. The serum bilirubin reaches a value around 15-18 mg% and then falls. This is not associated with any risk for the baby.
It would have been risky for the child if it was associated with certain other factors like lethargic baby, not accepting feeds well, Diaper staining with yellow colour, rise of serum bilirubin within 24 hours of life, Fetomaternal blood group incompatibility or serum bilirubin rising beyond 20 mg%
Thanks and regards.
