Posted on Fri, 11 Nov 2016
Question: A small bump on my back close to shoulder blade enlarged to approximately 1" diameter, became inflammed and painful for the past three days. Feels hard, cyst like. Size has reduced somewhat but still slightly painful. Should I see a derm or go to urgent care?

Brief Answer:
Lump on back

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

I am sorry to hear that you have a lump on your back that has become inflamed and painful. This sounds like a sebaceous cyst that has become infected. These need to be seen by a doctor and possibly lanced to remove the infected material and start on antibiotics. I would recommend that you go to an urgent care where they can easily take care of this problem. You don't need a dermatologist as these are benign and don't require any specialist training.

I did go to urgent care on 10/21. Infected sebaceous cyst was the diagnosis treated by lancing the cyst to drain the fluid then packed with gauze. I was sent home and asked to return in two days. Would began to have foul odor on second day.

Today, 10/24, gauze was removed (very painful) area had to be treated with lidocaine to continue gauze removal. The cyst was packed with new clean gauze. I was told to return in two days.

Should I be concerned that doctor has not prescribed antibiotics?

Thank you!

Brief Answer:
New treatment for sebaceous cysts

Detailed Answer:
The new treatment for the infected cysts are to simply drain them and then yur body will kill off the infection. If you still have pain and the area becomes more red then you will need to see the doctor again and probably start antibiotics.
